Mendocino Marketplace
Santa Rosa, CA

Midstate and Safeway continue their 51 year working relationship with the construction of the new Mendocino Marketplace in Santa Rosa, located at 2210 and 2300 Mendocino Avenue. The newly built 56,130 square foot Safeway Store and 10,400 square foot of retail shops sit on 7.23 acres. Two additional retail shops buildings, totaling 21,874 square feet are scheduled to commence construction this spring.

Construction began with the demolition of the existing Yardbird's store and site work in late April 2003. The existing Yardbird's store was originally built as a Safeway Store in the early 1950's.

The new Safeway Store and the adjacent retail shops; consisting of 7 retail units ranging from 1,100 to 2,101 square feet, opened to the public in November 2003. The shell of the Safeway and retail shops are comprised of 50,000 8"x8"x16" concrete masonry unit blocks designed to create the illusion of multiple buildings instead of one large building. The entire shell sits on a 900+ yard concrete slab that was poured in a single day.

Construction of the Marketplace took careful planning as the hours of construction were designed to not disturb the bordering residential streets. Despite the strict hours of construction, the store and retail shops were built in 131 days.
