On January 11, 2010, after more than two years of dedication and hard work, Midstate Construction Corporation and its team of more than 80 subcontractors and suppliers unveiled the $40 million, 75,000 square foot three-story, state-of-the-art Lawrence A. Bertolini Student Services Center to the students of Santa Rosa Junior College.

Designed to maintain continuity with the surrounding brick heritage style buildings on the college campus, construction features include a roofing system of concrete tile with copper flashing accents. More than 180,000 bricks were used on the exterior walls, and more than 45,000 brick pavers on the surrounding plazas and sidewalks. The foundation consists of more than 2,000 cubic yards of concrete, poured during midwinter rains and the resulting mud. Precast glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) was used extensively for the three-story building, requiring extremely tight construction tolerances in the supporting structure. The use of curtain wall and aluminum framed fenestration, coupled with balustrade and balcony features give the building its attractive traditional finish.

Additional architectural highlights include the voluminous entrance and its three-story glass windows. These massive windows surround and infuse the foyer with natural light, including the polished teak Ned Kahn kinetic sculpture suspended above the atrium. The interior is a complementary modern design with several eye-catching design features.

The dining room is the design centerpiece of the Bertolini Student Services Center. Its open ceiling of Douglas fir timbers and floor-to-ceiling windows effectively merge the surrounding view of majestic oak trees and landscaping with the interior of polished natural woods and airy contemporary design.

In addition to the beautiful architectural elements, technological features are built-in throughout the three stories. Technological considerations provide advanced audio-visual components, teleconferencing, and wireless access capabilities in ‘smart’ classrooms and meeting rooms.

The substantial size of the building and its extensive architectural demands required extraordinary scheduling efforts for successful project completion. More than ninety workers were active on site daily, consistently following a rigorous schedule set by Midstate Construction in the face of unpredictable seasonal weather. Midstate Construction Corporation as prime contractor for site work and building construction delivered this monumental building on schedule and on budget with zero lost-time accidents.

In recognition of this feat, the Bertolini Student Services Center received the 2009 Top Project in Education Award from the North Bay Business Journal.
