Whole Foods Market
Cupertino
, CA

The Whole Foods Market located in Cupertino on Stevens Creek Boulevard is a gem among this natural and organic food retailer’s stores. Not only is it one of the largest in the Western United States at 75,634 square feet, it presents several interesting and unique design features. Whole Foods Market partnered with Midstate Construction to craft the interior of its Northern California store into an unparalleled food retail venue.

The Market Bistro offers made-to-order foods and other entrees, and customers may sit down for their meal near the indoor fountain, or outside amid the ample café seating. Another feature is the Culinary Center which hosts cooking and nutrition classes. The shopping experience is further enhanced by permanent demonstration stations strategically located throughout the store offering sampler cuisine, wine-tasting, and examples of seasonal fruit and produce. Another customer service feature is the free wireless Internet access.

One of the most distinguishing attributes is Whole Foods Market's commitment to environmentally-friendly building materials. Recycled post-consumer, post-industrial waste products were included in everything from floor tiles, glass, bamboo, steel, paint, concrete, insulation, and low ‘volatile organic compounds’ (VOC). Energy-efficient design and products are integrated throughout the building, from lighting systems to low-flow water sensors, and energy-efficient refrigeration and heating.

Midstate Construction is proud to have partnered with Whole Foods Market to construct the Cupertino store and to provide the construction acumen and experience for innovative design and implementation.

Skylight

Particular attention was given to create the community character of a local marketplace in the layout of traffic patterns and specialty areas, yet still optimize the advantages of a large space to provide abundant product selections and easy movement in extra wide aisles. Separate entrances give easy street access to the Prepared Foods Department and Bakery. Shoppers can also enjoy the custom lighting design for all light fixtures and the two extraordinary skylights filtering natural light throughout the primary shopping area.

In addition, this Cupertino store highlights several separate kitchens constructed to provide a wide selection of prepared foods for take out or to eat in. Notably, the Meat Department boasts its own smoke house, and the well-equipped bakery produces fresh goods serving an array of hearth breads, specialty items such as vegan and gluten-free items, and diverse desserts and pastries. A service island in the Bakery Department also serves coffee, candies, ice cream and gelato!
