Midstate Construction Corporation was the inaugural recipient of the newest NPH award, Partners in Community Development, on May 5, 2010. Midstate’s President, Roger Nelson, accepted the award on behalf of his Petaluma-based firm which has made an outstanding commitment to working with the affordable housing community. Also receiving awards were Olson Lee of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in the Distinguished Public Official category, Don Falk as the 2010 Unsung Hero for his work with the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, and Natalie Gubb of Gubb & Barshay, LLP, for the NPH Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mills Hall, Mills College, Oakland - The seismic bracing of a 40,000 square foot, four story building originally built in 1871. Midstate renovated the interior, including new mechanical systems, accessibility requirements and finishes, and carefully restored the rare Second Empire facade to its original condition. This registered national landmark was awarded the Annual Design Award in Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Preservation Projects from the California Preservation Foundation.

Mercy Family Plaza, San Francisco – Adaptive reuse and remodel of existing buildings of the former Southern Pacific Hospital into affordable housing. The building, designated as a National Register Historic District, was constructed to historical tax credit standards. It received the National Trust for Historic Preservation Honor Award, the California Preservation Foundation Annual Design Award, and the Governor’s Preservation Award, among many others.

Del Norte Place, El Cerrito – New construction of four residential buildings, four story, 135 rental units and 21,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.
Midstate was awarded the Gold Nugget Award of Merit by the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in recognition of excellence and value for the best mixed-use business-residential project, along with the City of El Cerrito Design Award.

Petaluma Avenue Homes, Sebastopol – New construction of a 40,207 square foot, forty-five unit affordable housing project in Sebastopol. This is a GreenPoint Rated project and obtained 133 points of 60 necessary. The development has a large community room with an oversized kitchen, indoor fireplace, playground for the children and a community garden area. Affordable Housing Associates was the affordable housing developer on this project. Awarded the 2010 Gold Nugget Grand Award: Multi-Family Project. Casa Grande Senior Residential Apartments, Petaluma – New construction of a four building, two story, fifty-eight unit, HUD Capital Advanced project, totaling 42,242 square feet. This project was designed in a semicircle; promoting community. Casa Grande is the first multi-family GreenPoint Rated project in Sonoma County and received 103 points of the 50 necessary. 2009 Governor’s Award: Green Building

Santa Rosa Junior College, Bertolini Student Services Center, Santa Rosa – Ground up construction of a 66,646 square foot structural steel building for the student center for Santa Rosa Junior College. Pepperwood Preserve, Santa Rosa – New research building on the Pepperwood Preserve, a 3,117 acre nature preserve. The 9,500 sf building will feature a field research laboraftory, classrooms and library. Among the green construction components are “plyboo” and “wheatboard” panels, which are finish materials of bamboo veneer; recycled materials for doors and fences; a rain water collection system for storage in cisterns. Theatre Square, Petaluma – Midstate Construction, Basin Street Properties and Berger, Detmer, Ennis were recently awarded a Best of California 2007 award for Theatre Square Apartments in Petaluma. The two building, 128,500 square foot three story development features 56 units of multi-family housing, ground floor retail and class A office space. The retail areas which line the ground floor hold a variety of shops, Tres Hombres Restaurant and Jennie Low’s Restaurant, recently completed by Midstate. Best of California 2007: Residential

Safeway #2718, Mill Valley – Midstate Construction recently completed a new 44,685 square foot Safeway and the necessary site work within Strawberry Village, Mill Valley. Midstate’s scope of work included demolition of the existing 32,000 square foot Safeway and construction of the new store. Located in Mill Valley, fifteen minutes north of San Francisco, the entire project caters toward the high end market it serves. The store’s interior features the Safeway lifestyle package and the exterior facade matches the newly renovated Strawberry Village. As the largest retail tenant in the retail center, the exterior is broken into varying heights and extrusions, to simulate a smaller footprint and balance the other half of the center which is comprised of smaller shops. Midstate and Safeway worked together as a team to ensure a grand opening seven months after demolition of the original store, a new record for Safeway.
